SYNOPSIS:
Good vs. Evil, Mental Illness, Patriarchy, The Human Spirit. All strong themes that run throughout Beth Henley’s Crimes of the Heart. The story of the three Magrath sisters, Meg, Babe, and Lenny, who reunite at Old Granddaddy’s home in Hazelhurst, Mississippi after Babe shoots her abusive husband. The sisters were raised in a dysfunctional family with a penchant for ugly predicaments. Each has endured her share of hardship and misery. Past resentments bubble to the surface as the sisters are forced to deal with assorted relatives and past relationships while coping with Babe’s latest incident. Each sister is forced to face the consequences of the “crimes of the heart” she has committed.

CAST OF CHARACTERS
Lenore (Lenny) MaGrath (30 years old) The oldest of the MaGrath sisters, Lenny is a self-conscious woman who is concerned about her critically ill grandfather and her impending spinsterhood. She is a fixer, who denies herself the love she deserves.
Meg MaGrath (27 years old) The middle MaGrath sister, Meg has had many men and adventures in her life, not all of them safe and loving. She returns to be close to her sisters after her sister’s arrest. Meg will do anything for her siblings and is very protective of them.
Rebecca (Babe) Botrelle (24 years old) Babe is the youngest MaGrath sister who is the reason for most of the play’s dynamics. She has just been arrested for shooting her husband, after he discovers her affair with a young man. Babe is a genuine believer of love and truth and living in the moment.
Chick Boyle (Mid-30’s) Chick is the first cousin of the MaGrath sisters and lives next door to the home that Lenny lives in with their grandfather. Chick is the voice of everything that she thinks is wrong with the sisters and doesn’t waste time telling them. Chick is crass and opinionated and treats most people like servants.
Doc Porter (Mid-30’s) Doc Porter is a handsome man, a former boyfriend of Meg’s who lost her and gained a limp while trapped with Meg during a hurricane. Meg deserted Doc and he moved on, but still holds a torch for Meg.
Barnette Lloyd (30’s) Barnette is new young lawyer who comes to Babe’s defense when she is arrested for shooting her husband. Barnette has a personal vendetta against Babe’s husband and becomes fond of Babe throughout their work together. |
